The operating cost of another start
I examine how a new work package affects commitments already in progress across a services company. The session begins with an invented portfolio of forty-one active packages and the decision to pause eleven while thirty continued. Participants consider shared review capacity, specialist attention and the commercial account that must remain attached to deferred work. I include the JPY 63 million transition expense and the reasons some account leaders initially opposed a visible pause. The discussion separates a lower concurrent count from an unsupported claim of productivity improvement. It also considers the opposite mistake: centralising routine decisions until the coordinating function itself becomes a queue. The purpose is to help leaders examine the starting decision and its consequences, rather than adopt a fixed numerical limit for every portfolio. No confidential account plans are required, and the session does not provide a substitute for client agreement, specialist approval or the institution’s own delivery governance.
