Mandate
Develop an industrial company whose service economics and managerial capability extend beyond its founder.
Outcomes
- Reduced median approval time in a defined engineering/parts cohort from nineteen to six working days.
- Supported RMB 11m refurbishment work instead of pursuing RMB 34m proposed replacement revenue in a reviewed cohort.
- Assessed thirty-one completions from forty-two apprentices; twenty-seven retained a year later.
- Reviewed sixty-three monitored installations with seventeen actionable findings and eight false escalations.
Decisions in context
The investment introduced a separate chair and a clearer framework for the company I had founded. My responsibility became more explicitly about the organisation's capacity to act without waiting for me. We delegated defined engineering and parts decisions to twelve managers and examined the informal routes that could still undermine them. The refurbishment and apprenticeship programmes then tested whether our commercial and operating plans supported the long-term service relationship we described. I retained the cost, revenue difference and attrition in our account of those programmes. Remote-condition work has required similar precision about what a finding can establish and who remains responsible for the equipment. I continue as majority shareholder, but the CEO remit is judged through the company's capability and results, not through the volume of individual decisions I personally make each week.
Reason for the move
Current mandate following the governance change accompanying minority investment.
