The assumptions a product must reveal
Financial software should make its reasoning available to the institution that relies on it.
01
Keep a proposed match open to examination
I ask what makes two records describe the same event before accepting a rule that pairs them. Equal amounts, nearby dates and similar references can be useful evidence without being sufficient evidence. The product should preserve the source, the rule used and the uncertainty that remains, so a client can apply its own approval and accounting responsibilities. I work with domain specialists and customer delivery teams to test the difficult groups rather than only the ordinary matches. A high automatic-closure rate is unattractive if its meaning depends on excluding errors from the review. Where the evidence is ambiguous, I prefer a review task with an intelligible reason to a confident pairing whose basis disappears inside a score. The engineering decision should help the institution exercise judgement, not pretend the supplier has acquired that judgement by automating a comparison.
02
Treat capacity allocation as a product promise
A shared service can have enough total processing power and still distribute it in a way that makes some customers' work unpredictable. I examine who waits when a large import arrives, how the work is divided and which commitments the company has made to each institution. We need measures of individual completion experience alongside aggregate throughput. Bounded allocations can make a large job slower while improving the service for others; that consequence should be explicit in the commercial discussion. I do not want engineers inventing priority through whichever client can open the loudest support ticket. The policy belongs in an agreed service model, with exceptions authorised and visible. Architecture, scheduling and account management then have a common basis for explaining what the product will do when several customers need capacity at the same time.
03
Test whether a record remains useful after export
A file containing every row can still be an incomplete account of a customer's work. Attachments, review decisions, permissions and the relationship between versions may be needed to understand the record outside our application. I ask a receiving team to use the proposed export for a defined task, rather than judge portability by a successful download. The export must respect authorised scope and the client's obligations; it should not include another customer's data or confidential material merely because a broad copy is easier to produce. I work with delivery and legal colleagues to establish what the company has committed to provide. When a rehearsal exposes a gap, we should identify the missing meaning and the cost of repair before a termination timetable makes the problem harder to manage responsibly.
04
Make exceptional requirements explicit in the product
A customer-specific branch can appear to solve a sales problem quickly while creating a continuing engineering obligation that the contract never priced. I distinguish a supported configuration, a justified product extension and a separate code path that will require its own maintenance. The decision should account for testing, support, security updates and future upgrades, not only the first delivery date. I work with the commercial team to describe alternatives the customer can evaluate, including a later start when a reusable extension needs more work. I do not assume that every request belongs in the common product. Sometimes the responsible answer is to decline it. What matters is that the company understands the commitment it is making and does not hide a second product inside a promise that looks like a small change.
A leadership conviction
I began with machines that turned paper into an image. The image looked complete even when a corner was missing or a mark had been misread. Financial software presents a similar temptation: a neat result can conceal the judgement required to reach it. I want our products to expose the evidence behind a match, the cost of shared capacity and the records a customer will need if it leaves us.
