- Financial scope
- ₹8.6 crore FY2026–27 function operating expense; separate ₹2.4 crore approved data-improvement programme
Mandate
Make enterprise measures, stewardship and proposed data uses intelligible to the owners who must decide on them
Outcomes
- Withdrew an overstatement attached to the callback aggregate and retained channel counts
- Preserved missing turnover and later confirmation as distinct evidence states
- Narrowed a proposed aggregate release and declined an inadequately supported data purchase
Decisions in context
The CDO appointment made me answerable for the explanations that accompany data across functions. Forty-three employees work through four heads, with operating expense kept separate from the approved improvement programme. I report to Saira Dazquri, and Pradeep Qelmavi leads data-quality stewardship. Our work supports the insurer's professional owners without taking over their decisions. I had to withdraw the service judgement I attached to a correct callback total and fund a clearer account of its changing composition. Other decisions preserved unresolved declarations, reduced the detail of an aggregate release and declined a recurring purchase after evaluation. Each delivered a more qualified account rather than a universal assurance. The company premium and workforce are not my personal budget or team. I want the public profile to show that distinction alongside the costs incurred, the alternatives forgone and the questions that remain for management after a data recommendation has been accepted.
Reason for the move
Current appointment; exploring one first outside board role after consent and preparation

- Team
- Twenty-six data colleagues through three heads
- Financial scope
- ₹4.1 crore annual function expense
Mandate
Connect management measures with definitions, populations and the decisions they were expected to inform
Outcomes
- Brought operating owners into the interpretation of comparative measures
- Separated enterprise scale from the data function's delegated authority
- Prepared a broader stewardship remit across reporting and data acquisition
Decisions in context
The measurement role expanded my responsibility from maintaining customer-data states to explaining the management account built from them. The director title described an executive function; it did not make me a statutory director. Twenty-six colleagues worked through three heads with a defined expense remit. I learned how quickly a reconciled number could acquire a stronger interpretation as it moved into a performance discussion. A comparison could be arithmetically sound and still omit the population or condition needed to understand it. I began asking operating owners to explain what a measure was meant to decide before the team selected its final presentation. That did not remove disagreement or supply causal evidence automatically. It made the intended use part of the work rather than an assumption added after calculation. The later CDO appointment extended that responsibility to proposed releases and purchases whose value depended on similar questions about meaning, scope and authority.
Reason for the move
Promoted to CDO in January 2021

- Fourteen colleagues through two leads
- Financial scope
- ₹1.4 crore annual function expense
Mandate
Maintain the meaning and source of customer attributes used across insurance workflows
Outcomes
- Distinguished recorded declarations from analytical assumptions
- Connected stewardship questions with the responsible operating owners
- Built experience of records that had to remain useful beyond a single research assignment
Decisions in context
Joining an insurer changed the duration of my responsibility. In research, a record supported a defined assignment and its agreed interpretation. Here the same attribute could move through several workflows over a longer period, with users who had not heard the original explanation. Fourteen colleagues worked through two leads within a separate stewardship expense remit. I wanted the source and status of a value to remain available when it reached a new decision-maker. That required working with insurance professionals whose purposes differed and whose authority did not belong to my team. I could make a missing or confirmed state clearer without deciding what it meant for cover or price. The role taught me that data consistency is not the same as forcing every function to ask one question. A useful shared account can preserve different legitimate uses while preventing an assumption made for one purpose from becoming an unsupported declaration in another.
Reason for the move
Promoted to enterprise-measurement director in July 2015

- Financial scope

Mandate
Explain the relationship between research populations, response and the commercial inference proposed
Outcomes
- Reviewed the population represented by a study before approving interpretation
- Kept unobserved responses distinct from recorded preferences
- Developed supervisory and expense responsibility alongside statistical work
Decisions in context
The sampling appointment made me responsible for work performed through others and for the explanation clients received. Ten colleagues reported through two supervisors, with annual function expense distinct from the company's service revenue. I learned to discuss the intended inference before a percentage arrived in a commercial model. The available population, the invitation process and the response pattern could each affect what the result supported. Improving field discipline did not reveal every unobserved preference, and a complete spreadsheet did not make a study representative by itself. My contribution was to make those questions understandable to people who needed a practical decision. I also learned that an honest limit should be accompanied by a useful next question where possible. The move into insurance followed a wish to remain responsible for how records continued to be interpreted, rather than hand over an assignment and leave their later uses to another organisation.
Reason for the move
Joined Talqeri in September 2009 to own continuing stewardship inside an insurer

- ₹9 crore service revenue, FY ending March 1998
- Employees

- Team
- Member of a six-person research group; no direct reports
- Financial scope
- No delegated spending authority
Mandate
Prepare and examine field records under approved research methods
Outcomes
- Learned to connect a percentage with its actual respondent population
- Maintained distinctions between supplied answers and absent responses
- Built statistical practice under supervisory review before taking management responsibility
Decisions in context
My first appointment followed the June 1997 statistics degree. I joined a six-person research group as an individual contributor, with no direct reports or expense delegation. Supervisors approved the methods and interpretation. The practical work introduced a distinction that remained important later: a field could be empty because nobody had supplied an answer, and a convenient value would not resolve that absence. I also saw how a small percentage could attract more confidence than the underlying population justified. My responsibility was to prepare records carefully and raise questions through the research supervisor, not to decide a client's commercial action. The experience helped me respect both statistical method and the account of how evidence was obtained. Moving into sampling management required learning how to preserve that discipline across other people's work while giving a client an explanation that remained useful rather than merely cautious.
Reason for the move
Promoted to sampling manager in June 2003
What I am looking for next
I am exploring one first board role in which the interpretation of management evidence is consequential to the company's choices. The contribution would be to ask how a number was assembled, what decision it is meant to inform and which assumptions remain visible to the responsible owner. It would not be to supervise another data function or prescribe its implementation. I hold no statutory seat and have not completed my fictional IICA assessment preparation. August 2026 registration does not settle eligibility, independence or suitability for a particular appointment. Twenty-two days is a provisional allowance to test against induction, papers, meetings, travel and exceptional events alongside my executive role. Employer consent and a review of insurer, investor, supplier and customer relationships would precede confidential discussions. I would want complementary financial, legal, operating and insurance experience around the table, with a chair able to guide the move from executive recommendation to collective oversight. The next chapter should be supported by a specific need and a credible learning plan, not inferred from the size of the data team I currently lead.
