Chief Marketing Officer India

Explain the relationship before measuring the response

A broker's marketing should make its role, the invitation and the next decision clear before asking a prospective client for attention.

01

Keep the next invitation separate from the original attendance

An education event can be useful without every attendee becoming a prospect for a further commercial conversation. I ask the team to define the original purpose, the details needed to run it and the separate choice offered for follow-up. The record should preserve people who decline that next step without treating them as failed participation. Appropriate advisers and responsible colleagues determine the handling required for the programme; marketing should not infer unlimited permission from a registration form. The commercial account needs the same discipline. Attendance, a requested conversation and an eventual client appointment describe different stages. Keeping them separate can reduce a headline number while making the relationship more understandable. I would rather explain a smaller list that reflects the participant's choice than allow a well-attended event to create expectations the invitation never established.

02

Explain the intermediary before promoting its usefulness

A commercial-insurance broker has a role that can be obscured by language written as if it were the insurer. I examine what a reasonable reader believes the company itself promises after reading the proposed material. A technically correct qualification elsewhere may not repair a central phrase that assigns responsibility to the wrong organisation. Marketing works with the principal officer and appropriate specialists to describe the broker's service while retaining underwriting and claims decisions with their actual owners. Selected comprehension conversations can expose confusion, but they are not automatically a representative estimate of the market's understanding. The result needs to include readers who still require explanation. This method makes the business relationship visible before asking a prospective client to judge the brokerage's capability, and it avoids borrowing authority that a stronger-sounding sentence cannot create.

03

Report the stage of the relationship the business has actually reached

Several people can contact a brokerage on behalf of one buying organisation, and a useful conversation can stop before any appointment is signed. I work with authorised relationship and data owners to distinguish contact records, buying organisations, suitable briefs and actual appointments. Marketing should not turn a change of unit into apparent growth or imply that an appointed broker has already placed a particular policy. The account needs reasons for cases that remain incomplete, alongside the cost of obtaining and understanding the enquiries. A clearer pipeline may be smaller than the original campaign list. That is useful if it helps management decide which work is ready for professional attention and which needs another kind of response. It does not by itself establish the campaign's incremental effect on revenue, which would require a different evidence base.

04

Examine what the sponsor receives in exchange for funding

External funding can make a larger event programme possible, but the conditions attached to it should be assessed before the money becomes necessary to the plan. I ask whether a sponsor's proposed speaking position changes the programme participants were invited to attend or creates an implication about the brokerage's professional recommendations. The answer requires the responsible business and specialist owners, not a marketing claim of universal independence. Declining a condition may mean fewer events or greater company expense, and that consequence belongs in the recommendation. Accepting appropriate sponsorship also requires a clear explanation of the relationship. The useful discipline is to make the exchange visible and decide whether it fits the purpose, rather than treat funding as an uncomplicated benefit whose influence can be discussed after the programme has already been announced.

A leadership conviction

An invitation should tell people who is speaking, why they are being approached and what participation does and does not authorise. The commercial account should preserve those distinctions after the event ends.
