Bring the unfinished workforce question into the boardroom

My contribution to a board

I would help a board examine whether the workforce assumptions in a business plan describe conditions employees can actually use. My cases concern access to a benefit, access to a workplace and access to a credible voice. In each, a programme could look complete while a relevant part of the employee's experience remained outside the account. I would bring those questions into collective oversight, alongside directors with financial, legal and technical expertise that complements mine. I would not allocate homes, approve physical adaptations or manage employee representatives from the board table. The contribution would be to ask whether management has explained the purpose, authority, cost and unfinished decisions behind its proposal. I have also helped create rules that needed correction, so I would be attentive to the assumptions inside apparently consistent measures. A board should receive enough evidence to examine those assumptions without exposing private employee circumstances unnecessarily.

My first year on a board

My first year would begin with an agreed induction into the company's operating model and workforce relationships. Through the chair, I would seek to understand how management makes an employment commitment and which owners must act for it to become usable. I would examine a small number of completed and unresolved programme decisions, using appropriate summaries rather than private employee files. I would also study the financial account behind the workforce plan and learn from directors whose expertise differs from mine. Committee participation would follow that understanding and the actual charter; I would not assume readiness to chair from my executive title. Feedback from the chair and fellow directors would help me judge whether my questions improve the discussion without creating a second management process. The aim would be a practical contribution to collective decisions, with clear respect for the people who remain accountable for delivery.

Conflicts and their management

Nevzemi's estate owners, tenants, investors, service partners and property suppliers may create relationships relevant to another enterprise. The employee-managed holding vehicle also sits within the ownership account even though I have no personal holding. Before receiving confidential appointment material, I would review those connections and seek the necessary employer consent. Applicable Companies Act independence conditions, SEBI LODR requirements where relevant, committee obligations and directorship limits need assessment for the particular company. Neither a CHRO title nor a future databank milestone would resolve that review. The provisional twenty-two-day allowance must cover preparation and exceptional demands, and could prove insufficient for a proposed mandate. Employee information and private commercial arrangements from my current role would not become material I carry into another organisation. If relationships or time prevented a useful contribution, I would prefer to decline rather than rely on repeated exclusions from important discussions.

My independence statement

My executive role and the relationships of Nevzemi's owners, tenants, managed-estate clients and suppliers would need examination before any outside appointment. An intention to contribute independently does not establish that the actual conditions are satisfied.

Judgement in practice

01

Testing whether a benefit's condition belongs in the decision

Our housing rule excluded nineteen of forty-eight applications before accommodation need was reviewed. I had endorsed the condition and later supported its removal. Forty completed the revised review, eight withdrew, twenty-two accepted offers and eighteen remained waiting. A board contribution would be to examine the connection between a benefit's purpose and its eligibility criteria, while retaining the actual resource limit and cost. I would ask what information management genuinely needs and whether the outcome account includes people still unable to use the offer. The lesson is not that every request must be accepted; it is that the reason for consideration or refusal should concern the responsibility the company has chosen to undertake.

02

Keeping a programme's unresolved people inside its account

Eighteen workplace-adjustment requests produced seven physical adaptations and six agreed working arrangements, with five unresolved and ₹ 84 lakh approved for the programme. I would help directors distinguish consultation, expenditure approval and implementation, then ask which decisions still require authority or resources. Technical acceptance and individual arrangements remain with qualified owners and management. A property boundary may explain a dependency, but it should not erase the employing company's continuing responsibility to examine a workable response. The board needs an accurate view of unfinished work without receiving unnecessary health or personal detail.

03

Examining who chose the voice management says it hears

Four of six voluntary consultation forums had employee-selected representatives, while two used manager nominees. I corrected my earlier completion account and funded ₹ 14 lakh to reopen those selections and support participation. In another boardroom I would ask how a listening route obtains its mandate and what management does with the issues raised. These forums did not replace statutory bodies or recognised representation channels. The corrected selection established a better basis for participation; it did not prove trust, satisfaction or resolution of every concern. Oversight should follow the quality of the response as well as the existence of the meeting.

The seat I am pursuing

I would consider a first external role at a property or workplace-services enterprise that wants a careful examination of the people conditions behind its business model. The board should already contain complementary financial, legal and technical capability and be prepared to explain the contribution it needs. A nomination and remuneration or risk committee could become relevant after preparation and induction; no chair claim is made. I would want early conversations to address the actual workload, independence questions and unfinished qualification steps before discussing the prestige of the appointment. My value would lie in connecting an employment promise to the conditions required for people to experience it. That perspective should be useful to the company's decisions, rather than simply satisfy a desire to add an HR title to the board's composition.
