Define what the evidence permits the company to claim

An instrument earns a claim through evidence about the measurement it must make, not through the confidence of the people presenting it.

01

Ask whether the measurement supports the intended decision

I begin with the purpose for which someone intends to use a measurement, then ask qualified specialists how the result and its uncertainty bear on that purpose. A documented reference is valuable, but it should not become an automatic answer to suitability. The review needs to preserve the conditions of the assessment and any result that remains indeterminate. My role is to make that account available before a product promise is approved, including when I previously supported the promise. Quality and engineering colleagues must be able to challenge the reasoning independently of release pressure. I would not ask them to adjust a conclusion merely to match a commercial timetable. The useful outcome is a claim whose basis can be explained, with uncertainty retained where the available evidence does not yet support a definite answer.

02

Distinguish an endurance observation from a life prediction

I ask what an accelerated or bounded laboratory exercise was designed to establish before allowing its duration to appear in a commercial statement about service life. Completed hours, stopped samples and the proposed use conditions all belong in the account. A prediction may require a justified model and further evidence that a simple duration does not provide. Qualified reliability and product specialists should lead that assessment. I do not treat an early failure as something to remove from a presentation, nor assume that surviving samples prove a universal lifetime. The management decision may be to fund further work, narrow a claim or defer a release. Each option has a cost, but spending money on a test does not entitle the company to a broader conclusion than the test supports.

03

Keep missed disturbances visible in the measurement story

A useful evaluation examines what the instrument did not capture as well as the events it recognised. I ask the team to define the exercise, explain the relevant conditions and retain the misses through later revisions. A stronger result in a bounded bench test can justify another engineering step without proving complete coverage in customer use. Qualified specialists need to examine why a brief event was missed and whether the proposed correction introduces other limitations. My contribution is to keep the decision tied to that evidence, rather than let a cleaner display or a larger success count stand in for an account of measurement behaviour. Customers also need language that describes the permitted use without implying that every disturbance will be observed. A known limit should remain understandable after the sales discussion ends.

04

Treat a substitute component as a product question

I distinguish the nominal characteristic that makes a component interesting from the evidence needed to use it in a particular assembly. Procurement may identify an attractive alternative, but engineering and quality must establish whether the proposed product still meets its declared criteria under the assessed conditions. The review should include unsuccessful assemblies and the expense of qualification, instead of describing the purchasing option as ready because a supplier's headline rating looks familiar. I do not infer interchangeability from a short description or ask commercial colleagues to authorise a technical conclusion. A candidate can remain worth investigating while still being unsuitable for release. My task is to explain that intermediate state and its consequences for the development plan, allowing the business to make an informed choice about further work without disguising it as completed approval.

A leadership conviction

The boundary of a product claim should be drawn by the question the evidence answers, including the uncertainty and conditions that remain.
