Test the conditions outside the demonstration

Field technology must remain intelligible when the connection disappears.

01

Make delayed acknowledgement visible

I examine what happens between a field action and its acceptance by the central service. A weak connection can leave a user with an uncertain result even when part of the process has succeeded. The application needs a durable reference, a clear pending state and a safe way to retry without creating a different business event. I work with finance and operations to define which evidence supports posting and which requires reconciliation. Technology can stop a repeated transmission from being treated as a new request; it cannot infer that every ambiguous receipt represents cash actually collected. I want exceptions retained with an owner and a record of the investigation. That is more useful than a clean synchronisation count which hides the customer and accounting questions still unresolved after the network has recovered.

02

Design for the device that may not return

A remote-control feature is only part of field-device protection. I start by asking which borrower details need to be present for today's assigned work and how long they should remain available. A large download may make a demonstration convenient while increasing the consequence of a lost handset. We reduced the route package, removed identity-document images from it and kept device authentication and local encryption as separate controls. I also insist that incident reporting distinguishes a wipe command issued from a wipe confirmed. A device without connectivity cannot receive a new instruction at that moment. Security colleagues assess the resulting exposure, while compliance determines any required response. My role is to make the architecture and its limits understandable enough that management does not mistake a purchased feature for evidence that an incident has been contained.

03

Observe the action a translated prompt produces

Translation quality cannot be settled solely by reviewing a list of words. I ask officers to use the proposed screen in a realistic task while a reviewer records the next action they choose. The test needs to separate a wording problem from a workflow or training problem. We keep the underlying approved lending terms stable unless the responsible function authorises a change; a software release is not an opportunity to rewrite a customer's obligation. Language reviewers, operations colleagues and developers bring different evidence. I want disagreements resolved against the task and its consequence, rather than the seniority of the person preferring a phrase. A prompt that still produces a wrong action should remain under review even when the rest of the language release is ready and the project schedule would look better with a single completion date.

04

Budget for useful support life

A device can still switch on after the operating-system support needed by our application has ended. I therefore distinguish physical condition, software support and fitness for the assigned task. Procurement needs those distinctions before comparing replacement proposals. I work with security, operations and finance to identify the devices that must leave field use, the staged replacement cost and the operational consequences of keeping the rest temporarily. The decision includes enrolment, support and disposal arrangements rather than only the handset invoice. I do not call a deferred purchase a saving when the company expects to incur it later. A staged plan is credible when each remaining group has an explicit support assumption and review date, and when the temporary arrangement does not depend on disabling a control to keep an old device working.

A leadership conviction

I grew up in Aizawl and began my working life helping people use software outside a central office. A system that makes sense only beside its designer is unfinished. I want the field officer to know what the device has recorded, what still awaits confirmation and what must be explained to the customer. That clarity matters as much on a weak connection as it does in the boardroom where we decide what to fund.
