Buying groups and specialist-service communication6 min read
The engineer understood us. The order never came.
A specialist-service proposition must connect technical purpose, operating arrangements and the owner's expenditure decision without asking one reader to translate everything.

The engineer understood us. The order never came.
Our brochure explained the assessment methods carefully. I had approved it because the engineers we spoke with understood the service. The next question came from somebody else: what would the proposed work interrupt, and what decision would its report help the owner make? We had treated technical understanding as though it completed the organisation's buying conversation. Selected interviews with engineering, operations and finance colleagues showed how much of that conversation our material had left them to reconstruct.
I am Elsie Tevzori, fictional CMO of Vezqami Structural Services in Mangaluru. We provide condition-assessment and maintenance-planning services for existing commercial and industrial buildings. Our 290 employees generated ₹96 crore FY26 revenue. My remit is 22 marketing colleagues through four leads and ₹6.3 crore FY2026–27 expense, including ₹3.2 crore for campaigns. Leena Tezqori retains qualified technical authority; marketing does not declare a building sound or prescribe its assessment frequency.
I began in trade publishing, where the person reading a specialist article was not necessarily the person approving an account or funding a project. At Vezqami, that lesson became more consequential. A service could be relevant without being ready to buy, and a lost proposal could reflect a timing or scope problem rather than a fee objection. My work now connects the proposition, the customer's planning cycle and the capacity our colleagues can actually offer.
One service needed more than one explanation
Thirty selected interviews across ten organisations informed a ₹74 lakh programme linking technical scope, operating arrangements and the owner's cost decision. Eight of twelve later account discussions included multiple buying functions; four remained pending. Those meetings were not orders or evidence of a conversion uplift.
The lost buyer had a more particular answer
Eleven of fifteen selected former prospects discussed their decisions. Four cited shutdown timing, three scope ambiguity, two fees, one deferred procurement and one an incumbent relationship. The ₹29 lakh study did not turn those reported reasons into causal proof or an argument to discount every proposal.
The calendar constrained the campaign
Operations could support four of six planned regional campaign waves within the proposed appointment window. We released four and rescheduled two. Of ₹96 lakh authorised, ₹58 lakh had been spent and ₹38 lakh remained unspent at review; the balance was not a realised saving.
Current focus
Making a specialist proposition useful to the whole buying group while respecting the service calendar and the customer's right to have no new requirement.
