Financing equipment means understanding the work it must keep doing.

A point of view

A machine can have a credible resale estimate and still be the wrong asset to finance. I want to understand who maintains it, what the customer's workflow requires and what happens if either arrangement fails. The spreadsheet should reflect those answers rather than stand in for them.

Decisions in context.

Removing unsupported residuals from 46 equipment proposals

In 2022 our commercial pipeline included equipment offers whose final payments depended heavily on supplier estimates of future resale value.

Paying for a second inspection before a return dispute hardened

Our return process had allowed equipment to move from a customer's premises to a storage facility before all condition evidence was agreed.

Declining exclusivity while retaining a narrower supplier pilot

A proposed supplier agreement offered us a substantial referral pipeline across a new equipment category in 2024.

I lead an equipment financier by keeping the customer's production reality inside the lending decision.

At Orvenstead Equipment Finance, I am responsible for a US$1.42 billion managed receivables portfolio and 310 colleagues serving regional manufacturers, repair businesses and commercial service operators. We finance equipment that earns its keep through repeated use: machining centres, packaging lines and workshop installations. My job is to connect commercial ambition with the practical conditions that allow those assets to work. We are an independent finance company, not a deposit-taking bank, and our funding arrangements place real boundaries around the promises we can make.

I started in asset recovery analysis in 1998, when a visit to a locked workshop could overturn a carefully prepared valuation. A machine might be intact but costly to remove, or technically saleable but missing the controller needed by the next operator. That experience shaped my later roles in portfolio management, regional lending and operations. I learnt to look beyond the quoted purchase price without assuming that every small manufacturer had the same access to service engineers, spare parts or replacement capacity.

My work across operating leadership and the chief executive role has reduced our dependence on equipment suppliers' optimistic end-of-term values, changed how we handle disputed return condition and rejected an exclusive distribution arrangement that would have narrowed customer choice. Each decision had a commercial cost. I describe that cost alongside the result, because equipment finance cannot be judged through origination volume alone. The quality of a relationship becomes clearer when an asset disappoints somebody and the contract does not settle every practical question.

US$1.42 billion managed receivables

The June 2026 portfolio combines assets on our balance sheet with receivables administered for funding partners. I report those categories separately; the managed total is not a claim about assets we own.

Three distinct residual-value decisions

A review of 180 proposed equipment transactions separated independently supported values, conditional values and unsupported supplier assumptions. We changed the terms of 46 proposals rather than presenting one portfolio average as sufficient evidence.

Return-condition disputes reduced

Among completed returns, contested condition charges fell from 28 of 160 cases to 13 of 172 in the next comparable annual cohort. We retained the counts alongside percentages and examined the assets that had not yet been returned.

Current focus

My present focus is the availability of maintenance support over the financing term. I want the commercial team to understand whether a service promise belongs to the original supplier, an independent provider or nobody at all before a customer signs.

Conversations I welcome

Vanessa brought the commercial argument for exclusivity into the boardroom even though she opposed the proposal. We could see what her preferred pilot would give up, which made our challenge much more useful.
