Make the financial description fit the activity
I want a software company's growth account to explain what it has earned, retained and committed to pay.
01
Understanding the work before applying an expenditure label
A product programme may include investigation, maintenance and development work with different accounting implications. I ask for evidence of the activities and the point at which relevant conditions were met, then work with qualified accounting owners and auditors on the applicable treatment. A project name or an engineering budget is not sufficient evidence by itself. The process should also explain which costs remain outside a proposed asset and why. I want product colleagues to understand the question without asking them to make accounting judgements on finance's behalf. Once a treatment is agreed, the record must support later review rather than rely on the memory of the people involved. My contribution is to connect operating evidence with a defensible financial conclusion, including when the result reduces reported profit compared with an earlier proposal.
02
Separating customer continuity from new business growth
Subscription performance needs a defined starting group and a clear account of what happened to it. I distinguish losses and reductions from expansion within that group, then show new customers separately. Otherwise a successful sales period can conceal deterioration in existing relationships. Annualised contract value is also different from recognised revenue or cash received, and the report should say which measure is being used. I ask commercial leaders to explain the movements and the operating response rather than treat a percentage as a verdict on one team. A useful retention account can reveal that the company is growing overall while the original customer base is shrinking. Directors need both facts to assess product investment, sales expenditure and the durability of the plan they are being asked to approve.
03
Showing acquisition commitments under more than one outcome
An acquisition proposal can include immediate payment, consideration dependent on future conditions and expenditure needed to integrate the business. Combining those amounts into one purchase headline may obscure both the cash schedule and the decision still to be made. I ask for the contractual conditions, the evidence needed to determine them and the operating costs that sit outside the price. Finance then prepares scenarios rather than treat the maximum contingent amount as either certain or irrelevant. Qualified legal and accounting advice is essential to the agreement and its treatment. My role is to make the funding consequences intelligible to the board and to identify who will track the conditions after completion. The analysis should include an outcome in which the acquisition performs poorly but still requires substantial integration effort and management attention.
04
Making a correction understandable in the next board discussion
When a management measure changes, directors need to know whether the business changed or the explanation was corrected. I present the previous basis, the issue found and the revised comparison, including any period that cannot be restated reliably. This is especially important when a better definition produces a less attractive result. I do not want the correction buried in a footnote that leaves the original impression intact. Functional owners should explain the operating implications, while finance makes the numbers and assumptions consistent. A board can then decide what response is needed without trying to reconstruct the report during the meeting. I also ask the team what allowed the misleading account to pass review, so the lesson becomes part of our process rather than a private exchange between the CFO and one analyst.
A leadership conviction
Growth becomes harder to judge when its components are hidden inside an attractive total. I want finance to separate the customer relationship that continued, the expenditure that qualified for a particular treatment and the payment that depends on a future condition. The explanation should survive a reader asking how the number was made.
