Which question does the calculation actually answer?
I keep the observation, the comparison and the conclusion separate when commercial-vehicle data becomes a market story.
01
Preserving an unknown outcome when a listing disappears
A removed listing is an observed change in a source. It does not, by itself, establish a completed transaction. In the selected account I approved, twelve of thirty-six removals had confirmed transaction evidence and twenty-four outcomes remained unknown. The correction needed to preserve both facts. Treating the unknowns as unsold would merely replace one unsupported conclusion with another. I work with research-method colleagues to establish which event the source can demonstrate and which commercial statement needs further evidence. That distinction must survive the summary a customer reads, rather than remain in a technical appendix. A data leader is accountable for the interpretation approved for publication even when the underlying source record is accurate. The useful result is an account whose unknown portion remains explicit, allowing the reader to judge what the evidence can support without assuming that a complete-looking category table is more truthful.
02
Separating group composition from a price-change conclusion
The same band averages can produce different overall means when the proportions change. Our selected twenty-transaction groups demonstrated that directly: fifteen older vehicles and five newer ones produced ₹10 lakh, while ten in each band produced ₹12 lakh at unchanged band means. I asked the publication to explain the mix before describing the change as market inflation. The exercise was deliberately bounded. Age bands do not capture every relevant difference in vehicle class, condition or transaction circumstances, and unchanged band means do not prove that no individual price changed. Farhan retained the methodological assessment. My responsibility was to stop the aggregate from answering a broader question than the comparison could establish. I want a reader to distinguish an illustrative arithmetic explanation from a complete index or a valuation applicable to a particular vehicle.
03
Keeping bundled transactions visible without inventing unit prices
A combined deal can be important evidence even when it cannot enter an individual-vehicle benchmark in the same way as a single sale. One selected bundle covered twelve vehicles for ₹1.44 crore. Equal division yielded ₹12 lakh, but the vehicles differed and the agreement did not establish twelve equal achieved prices. We kept bundled deals in their own account and explained the resulting scope of the single-vehicle comparison. Exclusion from one benchmark should not mean disappearance from the commercial story. I ask analysts which unit was actually priced and whether an allocation is being mistaken for an observation. The method owner decides the appropriate treatment, while I remain responsible for making that treatment understandable in the published product. The reader should see both the retained bundle evidence and the boundary of the comparison it cannot directly support.
04
Allowing methods to narrow a commercially attractive headline
A research enterprise needs a publication process in which methodological challenge can change the conclusion, including one I have already approved. Anita retains enterprise decisions and Farhan leads methods; my twenty-nine-person function must make their different responsibilities visible rather than absorb them into a claim of personal authority. The issue is often a modest sentence with a large implication: a disappearance becomes a sale, a changed mix becomes inflation, or an allocation becomes an individual price. I want the final account to explain why the narrower statement remains useful. Commercial colleagues should not have to invent certainty to make the work intelligible. My role includes supporting the correction, explaining its effect on the product and keeping the unanswered question available for further research. A methodological boundary is part of the evidence offered to a customer, not a failure to finish the analysis.
A leadership conviction
A number can be calculated correctly and still answer a question the evidence never asked. I want the reader to know what was observed, what was grouped together and which conclusion remains unavailable.
