The interpretation became part of my authority

Chief Executive Anita Desvarki
Team
Twenty-nine colleagues through four data heads
Financial scope
₹5.8 crore annual function expense, including ₹1.6 crore methodology development

Mandate

Preserve the observed event and comparison unit through publication

Outcomes

  • Explained selected age-band composition behind two selected group means
  • Separated combined deals from an individual-vehicle benchmark
  • Kept methods challenge visible in the customer-facing account

Decisions in context

The appointment widened my responsibility from producing data to explaining what the published product invited a customer to believe. Four heads coordinate twenty-nine colleagues, while Farhan leads methods and Anita retains enterprise authority. The selected composition review required us to explain a mean change without turning it into a complete price index. The bundle review required a different boundary: an allocated average was not an observed individual price. I wanted the commercial explanation to remain useful after those distinctions narrowed the headline. The function’s ₹5.8 crore expense includes ₹1.6 crore methodology development rather than adding it as another budget. I own no personal equity and hold no statutory seat. Any outside contribution must therefore be described as a prospective first appointment, with further preparation and assessment before the research experience can be offered as part of collective board judgement.

Reason for the move

Current CDO role; considering a prepared first outside research-oversight contribution

Concurrent appointment

Financial scope
₹4.2 crore annual function expense

Mandate

Carry source meaning into approved commercial research

Outcomes

  • Approved a sales interpretation later withdrawn
  • Separated twelve confirmed transactions from twenty-four unknown outcomes
  • Revised publication review without rewriting the original removal records

Decisions in context

The thirty-six removal records were not the error. My approval attached the conclusion of completed sales to events that did not establish it. Farhan’s review found twelve confirmed transactions and twenty-four unknown outcomes. The eight-week correction cost ₹33 lakh and required a new account of the selected evidence. We could not rescue the original conclusion by asserting that the unknown vehicles were unsold instead. I had already learned the difference between a source event and its interpretation in earlier work, so the career account should not portray this as an unavoidable discovery. It was a failure to preserve an understood boundary when approving a useful-looking result. The later CDO appointment made that responsibility more explicit across the enterprise’s products, including the way a narrowed conclusion was explained to customers and commercial colleagues after the method had changed it.

Reason for the move

Promoted to CDO with responsibility across data interpretation and publication

Financial scope
₹2.6 crore annual function expense

Mandate

Follow source distinctions into material received by subscribers

Outcomes

  • Connected supplied transaction evidence with research questions
  • Kept quoted amounts separate from observed outcomes
  • Explained source limitations to product and commercial colleagues

Decisions in context

Joining the enterprise let me follow an interpretation beyond the analysis desk. A subscriber received a finished account and could reasonably assume that the words attached to a number described what had been established. Seventeen colleagues worked within ₹2.6 crore annual expense. We brought together listings, supplied transaction evidence and research questions without assuming that each source described the same event. I learned how a distinction could survive a working table and disappear in a concise commercial explanation. That experience should have protected the later removal account from overstatement, which is why the biography includes my own approval failure. The data-manager role developed the practical knowledge; the head appointment made me responsible for using it consistently when a publication carried the enterprise’s authority and another person might act on its apparent certainty.

Reason for the move

Promoted to head of data as publication responsibility expanded

Financial scope
₹1.3 crore annual practice expense

Mandate

Make the source event understandable before interpreting its commercial consequence

Outcomes

  • Distinguished missing records from demonstrated outcomes
  • Presented the limits of supplied evidence to client decision-makers
  • Kept client commercial decisions outside the analysis remit

Decisions in context

The analyst role brought client conversations as well as calculations. A source had often been collected to support an operating process rather than answer the commercial question now being asked. Eleven colleagues worked within ₹1.3 crore annual expense, and I needed to explain what the evidence could establish without making the answer feel evasive. A missing record might matter, but its absence did not supply its own cause. Clients retained commercial decisions. We could make the uncertainty specific and show what further evidence would resolve it. Moving into Kershavi’s data function allowed me to follow that interpretation through a recurring research product. I wanted continuing responsibility for the published meaning rather than ending the engagement once a client had received an analytical table whose later summary I would never see.

Reason for the move

Joined a vehicle-research enterprise to retain responsibility through publication

Financial scope
Assigned analytical support without publication or investment authority

Mandate

Preserve what a source actually recorded

Outcomes

  • Separated quoted amounts from established transactions
  • Prepared source descriptions for senior review
  • Escalated interpretations that exceeded the supplied evidence

Decisions in context

I joined in June 1993 after completing statistics studies in May. Eight people formed the research group, and senior colleagues approved the studies. My work involved preparing records, checking the description of the source and keeping the difference between a quoted figure and an observed outcome visible. I had no authority to approve a commercial conclusion or advise a client on a transaction. The useful habit was asking what had actually happened before deciding which label belonged to it. Later roles added teams, expense authority and publication accountability, but that early question remained relevant. Including the assistant period helps a reader see that the later sales correction was not a sudden invention of analytical caution. I had learned the distinction at the beginning and eventually became accountable when my own approval failed to preserve it.

Reason for the move

Promoted to research analyst with client-facing responsibility

Concurrent appointment

What I am looking for next

I would consider a data mandate in which the enterprise wants its commercial research to remain understandable when the evidence narrows the headline. The work should give a method owner a real opportunity to challenge the account and require the CDO to explain the consequence to customers. I am especially interested in products where an observed event, a comparison group or a priced unit can be confused with something more conclusive. A prospective outside role would need a chair who wants those distinctions examined through collective oversight rather than a director who rewrites each analysis. Twenty-three proposed annual days must include reading, learning, meetings and exceptional demands. Further governance preparation and an assessment of the particular company would precede acceptance. I would want the next chapter to strengthen a reader’s ability to judge an account, including its unknown portion, without presenting my appointment as a valuation service or a promise that every commercial uncertainty can be removed.
