Chief Marketing Officer / India
Keep the invitation within what the evidence supports
I want a bicycle retailer to earn attention from people whose journeys differ from the riders already closest to the brand, with research, partnerships and availability described honestly.
01
Ask who entered the research before interpreting the answer
I examine recruitment alongside the result because the route into a study changes what its answers can support. Club members can provide rich evidence about their own cycling experience without becoming a representative account of people considering a first commute. My 2019 recommendation blurred that boundary, and I had to correct it. I now ask researchers to describe eligibility, recruitment and missing groups in language the commercial owner can use. Qualitative work can expose a question or barrier without estimating its prevalence. A larger convenient sample does not automatically solve a coverage problem. I retain the authority of qualified researchers and avoid presenting marketing enthusiasm as a substitute for methodological judgement. The useful result is a recommendation whose inference matches its evidence, including an honest account of the people and circumstances it has not examined.
02
Treat a creator’s commercial connection as part of the message
I want an audience to understand the relationship behind a recommendation while it encounters the recommendation itself. A supplied bicycle or another benefit may matter even without a cash fee, and a creator’s sincerely held opinion does not make that connection disappear. I involve appropriate specialist advisers in reviewing the arrangement and the proposed publication. Marketing must organise the briefing, approval and follow-up rather than leave the issue to a contract nobody consults during production. The disclosure needs to be understandable in the actual format, not hidden in a profile or lost among unrelated tags. That is distinct from verifying every product claim, which still needs its own support. My role is to make both responsibilities visible, accepting that a transparent advertisement may feel less spontaneous than the original creative treatment.
03
Connect the advertised variant to a confirmed customer route
I examine what the customer is being invited to obtain, where and under which current conditions. A warehouse quantity cannot by itself establish that a particular frame size is ready in a named shop. Marketing needs buying and operations to confirm the relevant combination and to identify what remains pending. My team does not allocate stock or advise a person which bicycle fits them; it decides whether the proposed communication accurately describes the offer those owners can support. I prefer to narrow or delay an invitation rather than use a broad availability phrase to conceal a known gap. Confirmation is also time-bound, and a campaign needs a route for revision when circumstances change. The discipline is not a promise of perpetual availability, but an accountable connection between the placement and the actual proposition.
04
Let contrary evidence change the scale of the recommendation
A marketing programme should retain a real decision after the research, partner review or operating check has been completed. If launch scope cannot change, the review risks becoming a ceremony that protects the original proposal. I ask what finding would lead us to revise, hold or withdraw a particular execution before the investment becomes difficult to question. This includes my own recommendations and the unrecoverable cost of changing them. The CEO retains enterprise direction, and operations and buying retain their decisions; my authority concerns marketing resources and the invitation we publish. A useful account explains both the opportunity pursued and the narrower claim eventually supported. It does not invent a later sales gain to make every correction look profitable. That clarity helps colleagues challenge the proposal without having to challenge the legitimacy of marketing itself.
A leadership conviction
The people who answer most readily are not necessarily the people we need to understand next. I want the route into our evidence, the relationship behind a recommendation and the availability behind an invitation to remain visible.
