Commissioned audience studies and syndicated research reports
Ownership
Founders 48%, researcher trust 22%, domestic enterprise fund 30%; no personal equity or trust interest
Company scale
FY 2025–26 revenue ₹98 crore: ₹63 crore commissioned studies and ₹35 crore syndicated reports
Employees
321 enterprise employees; forty in the data function
Geography
Shillong research headquarters with study-specific recruitment locations
Reporting to
Chief Executive Nitin Pervalkar
Team
Forty data colleagues through five leads
Financial scope
₹7.8 crore annual function expense including ₹2.2 crore improvement work

Mandate

Preserve respondent, method and coverage definitions when research becomes a decision product

Outcomes

  • Separated the web collection series from eight earlier telephone waves
  • Restricted an online-panel proposition to its actual recruitment scope
  • Kept remaining selection and comparability limits visible in the product

Decisions in context

Five leads coordinate forty colleagues across research data and product definitions. Improvement work of ₹2.2 crore is included within the ₹7.8 crore annual function expense. Nitin retains enterprise commitments and Zoya leads survey methodology. My function must make the records and definitions dependable enough for those responsibilities to operate when a study is sold and interpreted. The method transition required a break in the apparent continuity of the chart, and the panel review required a narrower geographic proposition. Neither repair made the evidence universally representative or removed every uncertainty. I hold no statutory seat or personal interest in the company or researcher trust. The leadership responsibility is to make the useful research easier to assess while refusing an inference the design cannot support, even when the wider claim would be simpler for a commercial team to present.

Reason for the move

Current CDO appointment; considering a prepared first outside-board contribution

Reporting to
Chief Executive
Team
Thirty-two data colleagues
Financial scope
₹6.1 crore annual function expense; methodological approvals retained by the designated specialists

Mandate

Keep study definitions intact through report production and client presentation

Outcomes

  • Corrected my claim that 2,400 pooled interviews represented different people
  • Preserved the 1,650 distinct-respondent count without inferring population reach
  • Revised the approval process for pooled research products

Decisions in context

Thirty-two colleagues and ₹6.1 crore annual function expense formed the data-direction remit. In 2019 I approved a pooled-interview total as a count of distinct people. Zoya’s review identified repeated participation across waves and a supported total of 1,650 distinct respondents within 2,400 interviews. We used ₹39 lakh over eight weeks to correct the account and its approval process. I did not claim that deduplicating the identity resolved independence, coverage or representativeness. The error concerned the unit in the statement I had approved, and the repair had to preserve that limited conclusion. Promotion to CDO extended the same responsibility to method and coverage changes, where another familiar chart could carry a claim the underlying study had not established. My own approval remained part of the account rather than becoming an anonymous processing problem.

Reason for the move

Promoted to CDO across research-data stewardship and product interpretation

Director responsible for research operations
Team
Twenty-four research-data colleagues
Financial scope
₹4.2 crore annual function expense; client study commitments separately approved

Mandate

Retain the population, collection method and response unit through recurring report production

Outcomes

  • Connected working-file definitions with client-facing research products
  • Built continuing review between methodology, data and commercial colleagues
  • Made study limitations available beyond the technical appendix

Decisions in context

The move brought twenty-four colleagues and ₹4.2 crore annual function expense into my research-data remit. A recurring product created different risks from a single survey assignment, because a definition could become familiar across many reports and stop receiving active scrutiny. I worked with methodology and commercial colleagues to make the population, collection method and response unit available where a client interpreted the result. It was not enough for a correct explanation to exist in a working file if the main chart encouraged a broader conclusion. The later pooled-interview error showed that the process still depended on the judgement of the person approving the claim. As that person, I had to correct the account rather than point to a technical note as evidence that someone else should have understood what my wording failed to preserve.

Reason for the move

Promoted to data director with broader report-approval responsibility

Sector

Partner responsible for survey delivery
Team
Fourteen sample-operations colleagues
Financial scope
₹1.8 crore annual function expense; sampling-method and client conclusions outside delegation

Mandate

Keep recruited members, completed interviews and population definitions distinct

Outcomes

  • Preserved recruitment and response categories across different studies
  • Supported senior methodology decisions without claiming design authority
  • Established clearer links between respondent identity and repeated records

Decisions in context

My sample-operations appointment covered fourteen colleagues with ₹1.8 crore annual function expense. A recruited member, a completed interview and a person in the wider population each described something different. The work involved keeping those categories understandable across studies with different collection arrangements. Senior researchers retained sampling-method decisions and client conclusions; my team made the operational records usable for them. Joining Lersavni gave me continuing responsibility for definitions that would recur in published research products rather than disappear when a survey assignment ended. That continuity increased the value of a stable definition, but also the danger of treating familiar language as self-explanatory. My later approval mistake was a failure to preserve a distinction this earlier work had already taught me. The career therefore includes responsibility for applying the lesson, not simply the claim that I had once learned it.

Reason for the move

Joined an audience-research publisher for continuing product responsibility

Senior survey researcher
Team
Nine-person support group; no line-management authority
Financial scope
No discretionary study or function budget

Mandate

Prepare records with the meaning of each response and recruitment category intact

Outcomes

  • Learned to trace a row back to the observation it represented
  • Escalated ambiguous response categories to senior researchers
  • Supported study preparation without approving methods or client claims

Decisions in context

I began work after completing statistics studies in May 1996. Our nine-person group prepared survey records and resolved questions for senior colleagues. I held no line-management role, budget or authority to approve research conclusions. A row needed a meaning before it could contribute to a useful total, and the same person could appear in more than one part of a research process. The role taught me to ask what was being counted before comparing figures. Later responsibility made that question harder to preserve when a larger number looked commercially persuasive. The pooled-interview correction returned me to a discipline present at the beginning of my career. Experience did not remove the need to apply it carefully; it made my responsibility for an approved claim greater when the distinction was lost.

Reason for the move

Promoted into sample operations and later team leadership

What I am looking for next

I would consider a research-data mandate where the enterprise wants clients to understand the evidence a product actually supplies. The role should allow a familiar chart to change when collection methods change, and a marketed population to become narrower when the recruitment frame cannot support the wider claim. I would ask how methodology, data and commercial teams resolve disagreements about interpretation before a report is sold. A first outside-board contribution would require unfinished governance preparation and a specific assessment of suitability. Twenty-two proposed annual days must include learning, preparation, meetings and exceptional demands alongside the CDO role, with employer consent and a realistic capacity review before acceptance. I would seek a chair who wants to scrutinise the assumptions in data-dependent decisions without asking directors to become the research team. The contribution should clarify which question the evidence can support and what additional work a different question would require, rather than present uncertainty as a reason to abandon all useful research.
