Preserve the event behind the useful summary

A book sent to a shop, a copy bought by a reader and a revised report are different facts. I want the software to keep them different.

01

Separating book movements from reader sales

I ask which event a quantity records before using it to answer a commercial question. A shipment to a retail channel can support a distribution measure while leaving reader sales unknown. A useful movement account may also require opening stock, returns, promotional issues and closing stock for a defined period. I work with customer specialists to identify the available evidence and avoid turning an arithmetic residual into a sale without support. In our reviewed example, the movement account and transaction records supported 9,700 reader purchases rather than the 16,000 dispatches shown under the original label. That was a bounded correction to a product interpretation, not an assurance about every channel. My role is to fund the data work and make the limitation visible, while customers retain commercial and accounting decisions about their own business.

02

Preserving publication-product identity

A shared title can help a reader discover related publications, but it does not necessarily identify the item a trading partner needs to order or return. I keep the grouping used for discovery distinct from the product identity used in commercial records. Catalogue specialists review format, edition and source identifiers when a suspected duplicate could actually represent a separate product. Our review found both genuine duplicate descriptions and groups that needed to remain divided. We retained links between related items without erasing their separate identities. The software should also show where a proposed association remains unresolved instead of choosing the most convenient match. I do not treat a familiar title or a similar cover as sufficient evidence for a merge. The value lies in preserving a usable relationship without inventing equivalence between records that answer different questions.

03

Keeping issued reports distinct from revised views

Late records can change the best current account of a period without changing what a decision-maker had available earlier. I want reporting products to make that distinction inspectable. We retain the issued snapshot, record accepted revisions with their basis and show the time at which the revised view was produced. Unresolved entries remain identifiable rather than being silently included in a favourable total. This supports an honest review of decisions without pretending that the earlier report contained knowledge received later. It does not decide how a customer should treat a financial adjustment or amend its formal accounts. Those questions belong with the customer's authorised professionals. My responsibility is the data representation and the clarity of the product's account, including the cost and remaining limitations of repairing a reporting design I had previously accepted.

04

Funding data correction with clear decision ownership

A data defect often becomes expensive because its interpretation has travelled into a product promise or an operating habit. I work with the CEO, product leaders and customer specialists to define the affected scope, choose the repair and retain the unanswered part of the question. Some corrections can be implemented directly; others require source clarification or an explicit decision from the record owner. I do not make those decisions disappear by calling the work automated cleansing. The funding request should distinguish work already spent, new correction expense and any additional programme still awaiting approval. It should also state what the review will establish and what it cannot. This gives the business a more useful choice than a broad assurance that the dataset will become reliable once every flagged row has been processed.

A leadership conviction

I learned data work among book boxes and catalogue sheets, where a neat total could conceal several kinds of movement. I still ask what happened to the copy, which product it belongs to and what was known when a report was issued. Better data should help a publisher inspect those distinctions rather than give every question the same convenient number.
