Describe the responsibility and provide its conditions

Employment terms should explain what the company owes a colleague and what that colleague is authorised to do.

01

Carrying agreed employment terms through an acquisition

An employee transfer is not complete merely because the names appear in the receiving system. I ask which terms were agreed, where they are recorded and how the employee will experience them after the move. Past-service credit for specified company benefits is one example: the relevant date and benefit rules must survive the transfer. I work with legal, finance and the responsible managers to understand the actual agreement, rather than infer every entitlement from a general integration policy. Statutory rights require their own proper assessment and cannot be reduced to our internal benefit example. My role is to make the employment commitment visible, assign an implementation owner and arrange a check of the resulting records. The cost of honouring an agreed term belongs in the transaction account, even when it makes the earlier forecast less favourable.

02

Providing the resources needed for field assignments

A reimbursement policy can leave a practical gap between permission to travel and access to the money needed for it. I examine how an employee obtains the necessary resources before a required assignment, particularly where the work takes them away from the office. Finance needs controls and evidence, but those controls should not quietly depend on staff supplying their own working cash. A controlled advance or float requires approval, reconciliation and a clear route for exceptions. It is not unrestricted spending or a substitute for checking the purpose of the journey. My contribution is to bring the employee experience into that design and ensure managers understand their responsibilities. I also distinguish the funding provided from process expense, because a revolving float should not be described as if the whole amount were consumed when introduced.

03

Making job descriptions respect professional authority

Titles shape what employees, managers and service users expect. I want a description to recognise administrative contribution while making clear which tasks require professional qualifications and authorisation. In hearing care, navigation and appointment support are valuable work, but a broad consultant label can obscure the difference from clinical assessment. HR should not decide professional scope on its own or infer competence from attendance at a training session. I work with the clinical director and qualified colleagues to describe the boundary accurately, then align role descriptions, induction and manager explanations. A change in wording can also affect how a colleague understands status or progression. We therefore explain the reason, preserve agreed employment terms where appropriate and address concerns directly, rather than assume that a clearer title will be welcomed without discussion.

04

Testing whether a people process works after launch

I review a process through a sample of actual employee experiences after it has been introduced. A completed checklist may show that data moved, a policy was issued or a title was approved, but it cannot establish whether the intended employment arrangement survived. I ask managers to follow the relevant record and explain what happened to the person using it. The review should be bounded and honest about its limits. Finding an issue in a sample does not establish the rate across every team, and correcting those cases does not prove the whole system is fixed. I assign responsibility for the repair and for checking whether the same mechanism remains elsewhere. That keeps evaluation connected to a decision and a person, rather than treating the launch date as the end of HR's responsibility.

A leadership conviction

I look for the practical obligation behind an employment statement. Service credited in an offer should survive entry into a new system. Required travel should not depend on an employee's private cash balance. A job title should help a colleague understand their responsibility rather than invite work they are not qualified to perform.
