My next contribution needs a different kind of responsibility

My contribution to a board

I would ask whether a management account has preserved the relationships its conclusions depend on. A common identifier can make a presentation look coherent while concealing different people, roles or events. My contribution would be to seek an explanation of that meaning and of the unresolved cases, without taking over the operating team's work or claiming specialist insurance authority.

The shared-contact error gives that contribution a personal limit. I approved the premise that Rina's review later challenged. I would bring the experience of withdrawing my own recommendation and explaining the continuing work, rather than an assertion that data specialists always see the problem before other colleagues. A board needs room for qualified disagreement, including disagreement with the director whose expertise initially shaped the question.

Judgement in practice

01

The shared contact was not enough to merge the people

In 2019 I supported a common-telephone matching premise before a 920-pair review separated 610 supported same-person links, 230 different-party pairs and 80 unresolved. Withdrawing the automatic merge cost ₹62 lakh and six weeks. As a director I would ask what a proposed simplification assumes about the people represented in the records, who has challenged that assumption and what service continues for unresolved cases. I would not describe the correction as proof that a breach had occurred or as a measured saving. The lesson is that an intelligible uncertainty can be more useful than a complete-looking register, especially when the author of the preferred solution has become attached to its apparent efficiency.

02

A reporting category could not decide a financing interest

The 360-policy review found 72 financing-party entries translated into an owner category. Fifty-four were clarified and 18 held. An ₹81 lakh reconstruction and a five-week delay bought a more faithful reference, not a contract amendment or a payment decision. In oversight I would distinguish the technical mapping from the professional interpretation it supports. I would ask whether the receiving user understands the role, whether the source remains available and who owns the unresolved interpretation. The other 288 policies did not show this specific translation problem; that is narrower than a clean bill of health for all their information. I would keep that boundary in the committee's account of the finding.

03

The stronger matching percentage left more genuine pairs unlinked

In the 1,000-pair exercise, a stricter rule reduced false links from 70 to 10 and increased missed same-person pairs from 30 to 60. We recommended an assisted ₹1.3 crore pilot rather than an unattended rollout justified by precision alone. A board discussion should examine both errors, the population behind the evaluation and the people responsible for the remaining handling route. I would ask whether 390 unlinked outputs were being mistaken for 390 different-person findings. They were not. My contribution would be to make the tradeoff explicit and test whether its operating cost was funded, while leaving threshold implementation and professional use decisions with management.

My first year on a board

I would spend the first year learning how the company's records acquire business meaning. I would read selected papers alongside the source definitions and the decisions they supported, asking where different functions interpret the same field differently. That does not require board members to inspect individual customer files or direct technical reconciliation. It requires enough understanding to judge whether management has an accountable process for resolving material disagreements.

I would listen to service, finance and professional owners before proposing additional reporting. A new data-quality dashboard can create activity without improving the decision. I would want to understand which unresolved relationships could matter to the board's responsibilities, what is already being examined and where a committee needs a clearer account of consequences. My early contribution would be questions grounded in that context, with an explicit willingness to revise them.

Committee work would initially be as a member following induction. I would include preparation, learning and exceptional demands in the capacity discussion, and seek feedback on whether my interventions help colleagues understand the business. I would not measure a first year by the number of technical terms introduced or the speed with which management adopts a method from my current employer.

Conflicts and their management

My continuing employment and 0.15% employee equity interest would need assessment against the actual company and proposed role. The relevant relationships include the insurer's institutional investors, promoter group, commercial counterparts and any personal connections relevant to the appointment. I would disclose what qualified reviewers need to assess those relationships before receiving sensitive board material. The absence of a present statutory seat does not settle independence.

Confidential matching methods, customer records and unresolved policy matters from Vezqerthi would not become material I could freely use elsewhere. I would examine whether conflicts could be managed in practice without excluding me from so much of the agenda that the contribution ceased to be useful. Employer consent, realistic availability and the ability to maintain separate duties would matter. If a proposed role required information or influence I could not properly provide, the appropriate response would be to decline it rather than rely on the familiarity of a data title.

My independence statement

This invented record does not determine independence or appointment eligibility. Employment, the employee equity interest, investor and promoter relationships, and the particular board role would require qualified assessment against applicable requirements.
