My contribution to a board
I could help an insurance board examine whether the product account preserves the boundary on which a customer’s understanding depends. A package might contain both a base benefit and an option, but its opening name may cause the option to be heard as included. A renewal paper may group changed limits with presentation revisions under one convenient label. The board should be able to ask what the person is being invited to believe and how management has examined that interpretation. My perspective would make that inquiry more specific without asking directors to rewrite every product document.
I would also distinguish the observation from the conclusion attached to it. A comprehension exercise can expose an important problem, but a revised exercise with some correct interpretations does not establish that all customers understand the proposition. Different participant groups should not be turned into a precise general improvement by subtracting percentages. I would want the decision, the uncertainty and the next responsible owner stated together. The evidence can justify further product work without being made to stand for a legal determination, underwriting decision or actual claims outcome.
My present product remit is 172 colleagues through seven direct reports with CNY 94 million delegated 2026 expense. Company gross written premium of CNY 26 billion describes separate institutional scale. Actuarial pricing, underwriting, claims, legal interpretation and finance retain their own leaders. I would expect their perspectives to be heard alongside the product account. The contribution I propose concerns how those explanations meet in a customer proposition, including the willingness to correct a headline I had personally approved when the evidence showed a different interpretation.
Judgement in practice
01Changing my headline when the waiting-period qualification was not doing its intended work
In the fictional 2003 scenario, the wording I approved suggested immediate protection despite a thirty-day illness waiting period. Twenty-two of sixty readers interpreted illness protection as beginning on day one. Lanqiu Zhen challenged the headline, and I withdrew it rather than rely on the qualification elsewhere. CNY 1.6 million supported revision; a separate fifty-four-reader exercise left nine interpretations unresolved. The account retains both the correction and its limit.
For a board discussion, I would ask how disconfirming evidence reaches the sponsor whose approval helped the earlier explanation travel. Does management change the main account, or merely add another qualification while leaving the expectation intact? I would also preserve the boundary between this product observation and the specialist conclusions required around actual policies. The example matters because the statement being scrutinised was my own. It does not establish a regulatory breach, a claim entitlement or universal understanding after the revised exercise.
02Keeping a benefit change separate from a presentation change
The 2025 proposed-renewal review contained thirty-six wordings. Twenty-four altered benefit limits; twelve changed presentation only. I rejected a common administrative-update message and supported CNY 14 million of comparison-and-explanation work. The decision created a more differentiated communication task and left underwriting, legal review and any customer response with the owners and evidence required for those matters. It did not itself approve a live-policy change or improve a renewal rate.
A board could ask whether a programme label describes the institution’s administrative work or the effect of the proposition on the person considering it. Those perspectives can differ. I would want management to make the changed boundary visible and explain the implications through the agreed review process. Directors need enough detail to judge the adequacy of the account, while executives and specialists retain responsibility for the product work and applicable decisions. The case shows how a shorter label can conceal a distinction important to collective oversight.
My first year on a board
I would begin with the institution’s own product and risk responsibilities. Different insurers organise development, distribution, actuarial review and claims learning in different ways. My earlier examples could help frame questions, but they would not supply the answer to how this organisation should work. I would learn which matters are reserved to the board, what its committees examine and how a product concern reaches directors. Financial preparation and the company’s risk account would be essential alongside familiarity with customer explanations.
I would then follow one current product proposition through the evidence presented to the board. The inquiry would examine what management believes the intended audience understands, what research or operating observations support that belief and what remains unresolved. I would ask through the chair and established management channels. I would not commission a parallel product exercise or direct distribution colleagues independently. The aim would be to improve my contribution to collective judgement, preserving the distinction between a useful board question and an instruction to run the executive work differently.
The first year would also test the practical time estimate. Twenty-six days annually would need to include induction, preparation, committee demands and capacity for exceptional matters, with employer agreement before acceptance. I would seek feedback on the relevance and proportion of my questions. A first appointment should show that I can learn the institution’s context and listen to expertise beyond my own, rather than repeatedly return to a familiar wording case whenever the board faces a wider financial or strategic decision.
Conflicts and their management
Insurance product work creates connections through distribution, service partners, suppliers and related financial businesses. I would disclose the relevant relationships, employment interests and personal or financial circumstances for the particular proposed appointment. A company outside my current product category might still share a distribution partner or a strategic service arrangement. The actual overlap would need examination; a short sector description would not be enough to support an independence conclusion. Some opportunities may be unsuitable even where the product contribution looks initially relevant.
I would agree how new circumstances are identified after any appointment, including developments in product partnerships or financial interests. Disclosure, appropriate advice and participation arrangements would need to follow the matter involved. Policyholder identities, claim histories and restricted wordings from my employment would remain protected. The fictional public cases make an argument available for discussion without authorising transfer of real insurance records. I would want a nomination reader to see those conditions before assuming that a product perspective is available without limitations simply because it is expressed clearly on a website.
My independence statement
I have not been assessed as independent for a statutory appointment. Employment, insurance distribution relationships, financial interests and relevant personal connections would require disclosure for the intended institution, with appropriate advice and employer agreement before acceptance.

The seat I am pursuing
I would consider a first statutory role in an insurer where understanding the customer proposition is an important strategic and governance question. A customer or product committee might be relevant if its agreed remit and skills needs fit the experience. I do not claim readiness to chair it based on executive presentations. The institution would need to assess preparation, the actual candidate and the capabilities already present on its board.
I have presented to Neravelle’s board since becoming CPO in July 2019; I have not held a statutory seat in this invented chronology. I would want that distinction retained in every shorter biography. The proposed contribution is an ability to examine benefit boundaries, interpretation evidence and the explanation of proposed changes, alongside the colleagues needed for financial, risk and specialist judgement. The website can show how I reasoned and where I corrected myself. It cannot settle appointment eligibility or replace the institution’s own decision about suitability, independence and capacity.

IICA Independent Directors’ Databank: Not yet registered
This fictional China-based executive has not completed Indian independent-director databank registration. Any prospective Indian appointment would require its current preparation and eligibility requirements to be examined separately. The profile asserts no exemption.
- I would prepare for collective board judgement on the insurance proposition while ceasing to act as its executive product sponsor.
- Induction would cover the institution’s financial and risk account, product approval responsibilities and the evidence used to examine customer understanding.
- I want to learn how the board follows unresolved product interpretations through management’s agreed reporting channels.
