A banking number earns trust when the decision-maker can follow how it was made.

Section · The boardroom

A director needs to understand what the management account does and does not establish.

I would contribute to a board by examining the relationship between a management claim and the evidence used to support it. A data programme may produce an accurate count while the accompanying description changes its meaning. A current view may be useful while concealing the timing of earlier information. A common definition may remove ambiguity or suppress a legitimate difference in purpose. My proposed contribution is to make those questions discussable, with the responsible executive and specialist functions retaining their authority.

The 2023 party-clustering programme provides a concrete example. Its 1.32 million candidate clusters came from 1.8 million product records, with 840 ambiguous groups retained for review. A board should be able to understand why that result is not automatically a verified customer count. I would ask what uses are proposed, what remains unresolved and who is accountable for the relevant identity and business decisions. The data office can explain the method and limitations. It should not gain another function's authority merely because it assembles material for that function to use.

The 2009 branch-pilot correction would shape how I offer that challenge. I had described an unweighted mean of branch averages as the average experience of the observed customers. The difference between 5.1 minutes and 8.2 minutes was a difference in weighting, and I owned the misleading interpretation. In a board setting, I would want management to feel able to correct a statement clearly while remaining accountable for its consequences. The correction should reach the people who relied on the original claim, and it should not be turned into an unsupported narrative of subsequent improvement.

I would also ask whether the institution can identify the management evidence available at the time of a decision. The 2016 snapshot work preserved dated versions because thirty-two of 180 feeds arrived after the cut-off. A later account can improve present understanding without becoming the assumed record of earlier knowledge. That distinction can help directors examine a decision fairly. It does not excuse avoidable delays or substitute for financial reporting, source assurance or specialist review. Those responsibilities need to remain explicit in the institution's actual arrangements.

Generated service briefs introduce a related question about the appearance of authority. In the 2025 fictional test, ninety-six of 1200 drafts contained at least one unsupported date or balance assertion. Withholding branch rollout kept a research exercise from acquiring an operational mandate before its evidential basis was understood. I would ask what further work is proposed, which owners need to assess it and what the current result does not establish. Fluent language is a feature of the output, not proof that a factual assertion is supported or that the proposed use is appropriate.

My record contains executive board presentations from April 2020 and no statutory directorships. I would not present that exposure as equivalent to collective director responsibility. A first appointment would need a clear account of the board's needs, my preparation and the learning still required. I would consider contributing to a data or technology oversight discussion, but I claim no readiness to chair a specialist committee from this profile alone. The institution would need to assess the fit alongside its existing capabilities and the applicable appointment conditions.

Employment, shareholder, supplier and advisory relationships would need confidential disclosure and review. Twenty-six annual days are a conditional discussion point, subject to employer permission and the real demands of induction, preparation, committee work and travel. No Indian independent-director databank registration or exemption is represented. Current professional guidance would be necessary before a genuine appointment process proceeds. This invented narrative explains a possible contribution to oversight; it neither establishes independence nor provides banking, regulatory or legal advice. Its standard is that the reader should see the basis and boundary of the contribution as clearly as its ambition.

On governance

I want the reader of a number to understand the population, period and transformation that produced it. A matching process can propose a connection without verifying a person. Two departments can use similar language while answering different questions. The data office should make those distinctions usable at the point of decision, with responsibility for the underlying business meaning still visible.

I would welcome a carefully scoped discussion about the meaning, provenance and ownership of management evidence. A first-board conversation would need to establish the institution’s problem, the learning required and the conditions under which I could contribute. This invented profile is not a channel for customer data or advice about a banking decision. A real introduction should use an approved route and describe the issue without enclosing restricted records, account details or internal model material.
