Bring product judgement into collective oversight
My contribution to a board
I could help directors examine whether a proposed digital product makes a clear commercial choice and whether its supporting evidence deserves the conclusion being drawn. A promotional total, a search ranking or an experiment result can appear precise while leaving an important question unresolved. My contribution would be to make the assumption understandable to colleagues who need to assess its strategic and financial implications without becoming software engineers.
I have executive exposure to Solmerive's board, including discussions of product investment and engineering capability, but no director appointment. I have not chaired an audit committee or served as a non-executive technology committee member. I would approach a first seat with an expectation of substantial induction and collective responsibility. The value I could add is a product-engineering perspective that complements the board's existing experience, not a claim that specialist knowledge substitutes for learning the wider business.
Judgement in practice
01
A calculation that required a commercial decision
The promotional example exposed two valid arithmetic sequences with different totals. I could help a board distinguish implementation progress from agreement on the intended offer, asking whether the responsible commercial owner had resolved the choice and whether customer wording matched it. Directors would not need to choose the software's internal design. They would need confidence that management understood the policy being implemented and the consequence of delaying or proceeding. The four-week deferral belongs in that account, alongside the reason it was accepted.
02
An experiment that could not support its attractive result
The recorded 92,000-to-108,000 split did not match the planned equal allocation, and investigation found differential event loss. I supported withholding the feature decision until a fresh comparison could supply usable evidence. At board level, the useful question is whether the organisation has the capability and incentives to identify such limitations before claiming value. A large sample or an appealing click increase cannot remove an unresolved measurement defect. The investment discussion should include that capability even when it postpones a commercial narrative people wanted to accept.
03
A product architecture with four dependencies still present
Fourteen interface changes moved without the full website release train; four required coordinated backend work. I would help directors understand what that result says about the investment and what it does not. It shows useful freedom for a defined set of changes, rather than complete organisational independence or a universal productivity improvement. The board can ask whether management has accounted for continuing shared responsibilities and whether the next phase depends on further investment. That keeps oversight focused on the business commitment instead of inviting directors to act as a second architecture committee.
My first year on a board
In a first year I would begin with the company's economics, customers and operating model before assuming that its digital agenda resembles Solmerive's. I would want to understand how directors receive evidence, which product commitments matter most and where management believes the main constraints lie. Meetings with commercial, financial, operating and technology leaders would help me interpret the same investment from several responsibilities. I would also learn the committee calendar and the expected preparation, follow-up and exceptional demands of the role. My aim would be to develop informed questions and reliable working relationships, then assess with the chair where my contribution is useful and where further learning is needed.
I would pay particular attention to the link between a product measure and the financial account used for investment. A click, a completed order and a contribution figure answer different questions. I would want to learn how this company connects them, what assumptions its directors receive and how a proposed benefit is reviewed after introduction. I would also ask how the board hears about product work that has been stopped or delayed, since those decisions can reveal the quality of management judgement. These enquiries would help me understand the existing oversight process before proposing additional reports or importing a framework from my executive employer.
Conflicts and their management
I would disclose my current employment and relevant supplier, customer and investment relationships before accepting a discussion that could create conflicting duties. I would not bring confidential campaign plans, product data or technical materials from Solmerive into another boardroom. Employer consent, confidentiality and the practical allocation of time would need explicit agreement. The proposed twenty annual days are not a promise that every possible calendar can be accommodated; the actual meetings, preparation, travel and exceptional requirements must be considered. I currently have no director appointments competing for that allocation, but my executive obligations remain substantial and must be respected.
My independence statement
I do not describe myself as independent of a company I have not yet examined. My Solmerive employment, commercial relationships, investments and relevant personal connections would need to be disclosed and considered for the particular appointment. I would expect the company's advisers and nomination process to assess eligibility under its applicable requirements. A technology perspective or the absence of another director seat does not settle that question. Any information that could create a conflict would need to be raised before the role was agreed, with continuing disclosure as circumstances changed.
