Ask whether the confidence belongs to the evidence

My contribution to a board

I could help a board examine whether the company's data-based claims preserve the limits of the evidence behind them. My experience is particularly relevant when a transformation makes a record easier to use but changes what a reader may infer from it. I would ask management to explain the source, the interpretation and the circumstances in which the result is unreliable. The commercial consequence also matters: a feature can be attractive while exposing the company to a promise its evidence does not support. I would connect those questions with the service obligation and the authority of the client or specialist who owns the underlying decision. I would not assume that archive practice transfers unchanged into another sector. The board needs complementary legal, financial and operating experience, and I would learn those boundaries before offering a familiar method as a solution. My contribution should make the collective decision more informed, including when the responsible choice is to delay a capability that the business would like to launch.

Judgement in practice

01

A populated date field could still be false

In the migration review, 3,100 records supported only a year and 2,500 a range. I rejected a mapping that would have supplied an invented day and month merely to fit the destination model. On a board I would ask whether a reported improvement in completeness represents new knowledge or only a technical convention that users may misunderstand. I would want management to explain the consequence and obtain the appropriate specialist judgement. I would not select the database representation myself. The oversight issue is whether the company recognises that apparently cleaner data can alter the meaning of its service, and whether it has funded a response proportionate to that risk. I would also ask how the interpretation remains traceable when a later product or reporting team reuses the value.

02

The test result justified a pause, not a success claim

Ten of 120 experimental answers contained unsupported claims, so I recommended withholding the feature and allocating ₹33 lakh to further work. I would bring the same distinction between a decision and a hoped-for outcome to a board discussion. Directors should know what management has observed, what it intends to change and what evidence is still needed before the commitment becomes acceptable. They should not treat funding a repair as proof that the repair will work. I would ask how the next examination differs from the demonstration that made the feature attractive and who can challenge the result. The aim would be responsible authorisation of a product promise, leaving the detailed passage selection, review method and implementation with qualified management and specialists.

My first year on a board

I would begin by learning which records and derived statements the business depends on, who uses them and what happens when their meaning is wrong. That requires understanding the revenue model and customer obligation before examining the technology. Through the chair's agreed induction process I would meet the relevant executives and review a few significant decisions, including one that did not produce the expected outcome. I would ask how evidence and uncertainty reached the board at the time, rather than judge the earlier decision only with hindsight. During the year I would focus on material claims and the way management escalates a finding that challenges a planned launch or service commitment. I would study the financial and legal consequences with colleagues whose expertise complements mine. I would also seek feedback on whether my questions were useful at board level or drifting into the design of an operational control. By the end of the first year, I would want to understand the company's specific responsibilities well enough to challenge an unsupported claim without making its executives explain every technical detail simply because that is where I feel most comfortable.

Conflicts and their management

Nerzhavi and Hozurei relationships would need examination alongside my own employment, investments and relevant family interests. A prospective company might be a client, supplier, partner or competitor even if its name is unfamiliar at first. I would arrange the relationship review before sensitive material was shared and seek employer consent for the time and confidentiality obligations. If the board's central work repeatedly involved matters from which I had to withdraw, the appointment might be unsuitable. I would not use a seat to obtain collection material for my employer or bring protected client examples into another company's discussion. Relationships can change after appointment, so disclosure needs to continue. I would prefer to raise a possible limitation early and let the chair and advisers assess it than assume that technical distance from a commercial contract removes the underlying conflict.

My independence statement

My employment, financial interests, relevant family relationships and the proposed company's commercial connections would require disclosure and assessment. I would ask the company and appropriate advisers to consider the applicable Companies Act requirements and any listed-company appointment or committee conditions. Technical judgement and a willingness to challenge management do not by themselves establish legal independence.

Board reviews of material data-quality and product-evidence decisions

I explain the basis and limits of material data claims, including the decision to withhold an experimental answer feature. I attend in my executive capacity, hold no directorship and do not vote on board decisions.

Governance learning and readiness

IICA Independent Directors’ Databank: Not yet registered

I have not yet registered in India's independent directors databank and have neither completed the proficiency assessment nor claimed an exemption. This profile describes preparation, not appointment eligibility. Before proceeding with a relevant opportunity I would verify the registration and assessment requirements that apply and complete the necessary steps through the proper process.

  • I am studying directors' collective duties, financial statements and the distinction between oversight of a material data claim and operating the quality process that produces it.
  • My preparation includes reviewing how a board can ask for evidence, escalation and accountable management action without becoming a technical release committee. I do not claim an audit-chair qualification or prior board service.

The seat I am pursuing

I am considering one first non-executive role in a specialist software or records-dependent service business, with a contribution to technology or data oversight after appropriate induction. I would not seek to chair a committee immediately or present myself as a general expert in every domain using data. I have no current directorships and provisionally allow eighteen days annually, subject to a detailed calendar and capacity discussion. Databank preparation and the specific appointment requirements remain to be completed and assessed. I would value a board that wants to understand why a result may look convincing while resting on a narrower source, and that also expects me to learn beyond my own professional experience. If the opportunity required routine platform design, certification of historical material or approval of specialist conclusions outside my competence, I would explain that mismatch rather than let a broad CDO label imply a contribution I could not responsibly make.
