Ask what the promise requires the enterprise to do

My contribution to a board

I would help a board examine whether management's growth proposition connects the customer promise with the work and resources needed to deliver it. A campaign can be clear to its author and still leave a buyer with a materially different understanding of cost, scope or timing. My experience would help me ask where those assumptions are tested and how management responds when the receiving team challenges them. I would not use a board seat to rewrite campaigns or direct the sales organisation. The contribution should be to collective scrutiny of investment, obligations and the quality of management's explanation. I would need colleagues with complementary financial, legal and operating experience, and I would learn the receiving enterprise before assuming that my venue-software examples describe its risks. My own corrections make me particularly attentive to the difference between defending an original approval and improving the decision now in front of the company.

Judgement in practice

01

A component price did not describe the illustrated purchase

The ₹1.2 lakh annual licence example omitted required first-year setup and training that brought the illustrated amount to ₹2.6 lakh before taxes. I had approved that presentation. For a board, I would ask how management establishes the complete basis of a material commercial proposition and whether the relevant delivery owners have examined it. The issue is not whether directors should approve each piece of copy. It is whether the enterprise has a credible process for identifying assumptions that could change the buyer's decision. Our ₹12 lakh correction and review of 32 enquiries, including 11 with the specific misunderstanding, remain part of the account. I would not turn that activity into a financial benefit without evidence. A useful board discussion would connect the expectation, the correction and the change in management practice.

02

An interested audience did not create an immediate implementation window

The venue campaign reached 73 of 120 reviewed conversations after event arrangements were already committed. Eighteen had a later planning window and 29 needed clarification. I stopped the immediate activity, kept ₹28 lakh spent visible and approved a separate ₹22 lakh pilot still under review. In oversight I would ask whether management's investment case distinguishes customer interest from the practical ability to act. I would also want the original spending and the unfinished experiment to remain visible together. The board should be able to challenge a forecast without requiring management to pretend that uncertainty has disappeared. My contribution would be to ask what the next evidence would establish and how it would affect further funding, rather than to select the campaign dates or supervise the sales follow-up myself.

My first year on a board

I would begin with the company's commercial model and the responsibilities its customers believe they are buying. Through an induction agreed with the chair, I would hear from product, operations, finance and customer-facing leaders and review selected past investment decisions. I would want to understand how directors currently distinguish an attractive proposition from a credible plan to fulfil it. The first meetings would be a period of listening and learning, especially in financial and sector matters beyond my executive experience. Twenty-one days is a proposed annual allowance for preparation, meetings, induction and travel, subject to employer consent and the actual calendar. An acquisition or significant commercial problem could require additional time. I would ask the chair for feedback on whether my questions improve collective judgement and whether I am respecting the boundary between oversight and management's operating choices.

Conflicts and their management

Dorvuli's venue customers, event-service partners, investor relationships and employee ownership arrangements would need examination before a proposed seat progressed. I would disclose relevant interests and relationships through the company's agreed process and seek qualified assessment of the actual appointment. Confidential customer plans, partner terms and unpublished product work would not be carried into another board's discussion. I would consider practical conflicts as well as formal eligibility: a recurring need to withdraw from the central commercial questions might leave too little room for a useful contribution. Employer agreement and time availability would also need to be real. The review could not end with an initial declaration because relationships and my executive responsibilities may change. A suitable role should allow independent judgement and meaningful participation, not merely an attractive title with its difficult implications deferred.

My independence statement

Any proposed appointment would require qualified review of my employment, employee-pool interests and relationships through venue customers, partners and investors. A marketing leadership title does not establish independence or eligibility.
