The boardroom
A precise report does not remove the need for collective judgement.
I approach workforce oversight through the quality of the explanation management provides. A people proposal may arrive with a precise total, an attractive analytical result or a completed integration milestone. I want to understand what the evidence actually supports and which assumptions remain open. My executive experience has shown how easily an administrative category can acquire the authority of a decision. A board should be able to distinguish the record from the judgement that management has made through it.
At Orvenna Communications I present to the board and compensation committee as CHRO. I have done so since 2020, and I currently hold no director or committee appointments. The distinction is substantive. Preparing a management proposal gives me responsibility for the account I submit; serving on a board would involve collective duties across the whole enterprise. I would not treat familiarity with board papers as proof that I am already prepared for every aspect of a director’s role.
The vacancy review is one example of the questions I would bring. Removing obsolete and duplicate entries reduced the active list, but it did not establish a saving in payroll. A board examining the result should understand whether an apparent improvement arose from operating change or from a correction to the reporting population. That does not make the correction unimportant. It gives it the right meaning, so the institution does not build a larger conclusion on an achievement the evidence cannot support.
The turnover-model pilot raises a different question. A technically interesting output still needs a justified intended use. I stopped the distribution of individual rankings while supporting an aggregate review of working conditions. In oversight, I would ask how management had considered the audience, the possible consequences and the responsibilities of data, privacy and employment specialists. I would also ask what management intended to do about the underlying issue if the proposed tool was not used. Caution should lead to a better decision process, not an absence of responsibility.
Acquisition reporting provides a third perspective. We left twelve role mappings open rather than imply that unlike responsibilities had been resolved by a common title. A board should be told what remains undecided, why it matters and who owns the next step. It should not need to intervene in individual job descriptions to understand whether management’s completion claim is reliable. The distinction between oversight and executive action protects both the board’s view of the whole business and the authority of managers responsible for delivery.
My contribution would fit a compensation, nomination or people-related committee where the remit calls for this experience. I would not seek to chair a committee on a first appointment. I would need preparation in the institution’s financial position, network and service model, investment programme and wider risk responsibilities. Workforce evidence is connected to those subjects, but knowledge of one connection is not equivalent to expertise in all of them. Appropriate advice and a willingness to learn remain necessary parts of responsible participation.
Independence would require an assessment of my employment, interests and relevant relationships against the proposed company and its applicable framework. I would disclose connections with communications providers, partners and technology suppliers before acceptance. A recurring conflict that removes me from important discussions may make a role unsuitable even if individual recusals are possible. I would not share confidential personnel records, analytical outputs or transaction material between organisations. These are practical boundaries on participation, not statements that this invented profile has received a legal or regulatory finding.
My indicative availability is 25 days annually including preparation and travel, subject to employer agreement and the demands of the actual seat. A difficult period could require more, so the number needs discussion rather than being treated as an automatic commitment. I am not registered in India’s independent-director databank and make no eligibility claim for an Indian appointment. My immediate interest is a possible United States role with a defined need for this experience. The useful contribution would be to make management’s reasoning more examinable while accepting the wider responsibilities and learning that a first board appointment would bring.
On governance
I trust numbers more when the person presenting them can explain what they leave out. A workforce report should help management ask a better question about work, not give an uncertain judgement the appearance of a settled fact. I want the employee’s account and the analytical account to be capable of correcting each other.

I welcome discussions about people leadership in communications businesses where reporting, acquisitions or analytical tools are changing how employees are understood. I would also consider a first external board contribution with a defined need for workforce judgement and suitable preparation. An initial approach should describe the business question without sharing identifiable employee records, private model outputs or confidential transaction material.
