Keep the meaning of the money inside the decision

I am CFO of the fictional Zhevqerni General Assurance in Chandigarh. Thirty-eight finance colleagues work through five heads within ₹7.2 crore annual function expense. Our enterprise has 463 employees and eighteen branches. Gross written premium of ₹1,120 crore for FY ending March 2026 and assets of ₹2,260 crore at that March describe different measures; neither supplies a shortcut to the cash available for a proposal.

My thirty-four years began in industrial export accounts and treasury before moving into insurer financial control. That route taught me to ask about currency, timing and responsibility as well as amount. An unsold valuation movement is not a receipt. A foreign-currency quote does not become a fixed rupee commitment because a spreadsheet uses one rate. An average cash scenario does not establish capacity for the largest scenario in the same paper.

In 2021 I combined ₹6 crore of coupon receipts with a ₹4 crore unsold valuation increase and described the ₹10 crore total as cash supporting an ₹8 crore office-refit proposal. I withdrew that recommendation. The revised ₹5.2 crore commitment was considered against the identified ₹6 crore cash source, with other permissions and capital and risk assessment separate. The original error was a failure of meaning, not addition.

A lower supplier fee carried more retained work

A founder-affiliated records-service quote of ₹5.6 crore rose to ₹7.6 crore after retrieval and internal oversight. An independent option totalled ₹7.4 crore for the defined annual scope. We retained the separate ₹28 lakh review cost and governance assessment rather than call the model difference realised profit.

The average scenario left a larger scenario unfunded

Illustrative cash needs of ₹0, ₹12 crore and ₹36 crore carried assumed weights of 40%, 40% and 20%. Their ₹12 crore mean did not make ₹18 crore existing capacity sufficient for the ₹36 crore case. The response retained additional liquidity, with a visible planning cost.

An incentive ceiling was not a reason to reward volume alone

A proposed ₹3.6 crore maximum pool initially weighted premium growth at 80% and expense at 20%. I worked with risk, actuarial and people colleagues on a 40/30/30 proposal including service and underwriting quality. It remained subject to governance and professional review, with no payout invented.

Current focus

Financial recommendations that retain cash state, currency, service scope and scenario limits. I want the board to see the obligation inside a price and the uncertainty inside a forecast before it authorises the next commitment.

Conversations I welcome

A first outside non-executive contribution after employer agreement and company-specific assessment. My 0.8% shareholding forms part of the employee stake, and my CFO role carries no board appointment. Databank registration and proficiency assessment are complete in this fictional account; twenty-three days remain provisional.

A total can be arithmetically correct and still answer the wrong financial question. I ask what each amount represents, whose obligation it supports and which conditions must hold before it can justify a commitment. The distinction should remain visible when the paper is shortened for a chief executive or board.

A related supplier's lower fee did not cover the same work

In 2023 a records-service proposal from an affiliate of the founder holding company quoted ₹5.6 crore annually.

In the words of others

Trusted by those who appoint.

Ranjit withdrew the refit recommendation when the cash description failed, retaining both the narrower scope and his responsibility for the original paper.

He kept the management liquidity scenarios distinct from actuarial and capital assessments, so a useful planning exercise did not acquire authority it had not earned.
