Software ready before the site gate opens

Chief Technology Officer Australia
I run the software a building site needs before its first worker walks through the gate, usually between six and seven in the morning.

Start a conversation01 / Leadership approach
A site manager at a locked gate with forty workers behind him does not care which component failed. He needs to know who has completed the induction, who holds the right permit and whether the day can start. I judge our engineering by that moment first, and by the elegance of our architecture a long way second.

Evidence from practice
- Pausing feature work for eleven weeks to separate customer data inside the database
- In March 2023 an engineer reviewing a new subcontractor-compliance export noticed that one report query filtered records by project but not by customer account.
- Moving older site photographs to slower storage and losing a customer over it
- By mid-2024 our customers had stored about 430 million photographs in site diaries and defect records, roughly 1.1 petabytes.
- Paying for a Melbourne standby rather than a cheaper one in Singapore
- At 6.20 am on 27 August 2024, a network fault in our cloud provider's Sydney region, combined with our own single-region design, stopped digital sign-in for forty-seven minutes.
