Plant turnarounds
Three sites taken from losses back to budget. Knows which early indicators a board should watch: breakdown hours, contractor turnover, and the gap between rated and achieved capacity.
Ahmedabad · Industrial operations
Operating judgement for the boards of industrial companies. Thirty years inside plants, the last eight as MD & CEO of a building-materials manufacturer.
Rajiv Mehrotra has spent his working life where industrial companies make or lose money: on the shop floor, in the kiln line, and in the monthly review where a plant head explains why the numbers moved.
He joined a large engineering manufacturer as a graduate engineer in 1994 and ran his first plant at thirty-four. Over the next two decades he moved through cement and building materials, taking on sites that were losing money and returning each of them to a stable operating margin.
From 2016 to 2024 he was Managing Director & CEO of a building-materials company with plants in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. In that role he led a greenfield capacity expansion from site selection through commissioning, reported to a board with a strong independent bench, and sat through every audit committee meeting as an invitee.
He now serves as an Independent Director on the board of an unlisted public company in engineering products, and is seeking one or two further board seats with industrial, capital-goods or materials companies, listed or unlisted.
His value to a board is practical. He can read a capex proposal and tell whether the commissioning schedule is honest, walk a plant and see the safety culture for what it is, and ask management the question behind the variance.
An unlisted public company, engineering products
Member of the Risk Management and CSR Committees. Leads the board's quarterly review of plant safety and capacity utilisation.
A building-materials company, three states
Led a greenfield plant from land acquisition to commercial production and took the company's installed capacity from 2.4 to 4.1 million tonnes a year. Built the enterprise risk register the board still uses.
A mid-sized cement manufacturer, western India
Turned around two loss-making plants within three years each through kiln reliability work, fuel-mix changes and a reset of contractor safety standards.
A diversified industrial group, Gujarat
Ran a 1,100-person plant that had missed its budget four years in a row; brought it back to plan in eighteen months and handed it over with a trained successor.
A large engineering manufacturer
Maintenance, production planning and a first plant turnaround as the youngest production manager in the division.
Committee work where an operator's eye adds the most, with the evidence behind each.
Designed and ran the enterprise risk register as MD & CEO, with plant-level owners for each operational, safety and supply risk, reviewed by the board every quarter.
Oversaw CSR spending across three plant districts, shifting it toward vocational training and water projects that local communities asked for and could keep running.
Eight years presenting to an audit committee as a permanent invitee; reads cost audit reports, inventory valuation and capex capitalisation with a practitioner's scepticism.
Handled dealer, supplier and community grievances through a plant expansion, and understands how operating decisions show up in investor and shareholder questions.
Three sites taken from losses back to budget. Knows which early indicators a board should watch: breakdown hours, contractor turnover, and the gap between rated and achieved capacity.
Site selection, land and environmental clearances, EPC contracting and commissioning. Tests cost-to-complete estimates and schedule buffers before the board approves them.
Process safety, contractor safety and near-miss reporting. Treats a quiet safety dashboard as a question to ask, and helps boards set indicators that surface problems early.
Fuel mix, power and freight as the three levers in materials businesses. Helps boards separate structural cost change from a good quarter.
Plants live with their neighbours. Experience turning CSR from an annual spend exercise into programmes that local people and district officials support.
Built a bench of plant heads who went on to run larger sites. Useful to an NRC or a board reviewing depth below the CEO.
